Women's basketball team to pay tribute to Oklahoma State by playing hard

For every game this season, coach Bill Fennelly and the rest of the coaching staff pin a bright orange number four onto the lapels of their suit jackets.

The pin represents the four people who were killed in an untimely plane crash flying over Perry County, Ark., including the Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna.

At Wednesday's game in Hilton Coliseum, Fennelly will still pin that number four onto his jacket, but this time Iowa State will be playing Oklahoma State — the team Fennelly's to which number four pin so proudly pays tribute.

"It's one of those things that it's unimaginable that it would happen,,cheappaneraiwatcheswholesale can offer you wholesale pricing on name brand designer." Fennelly said.

Budke wasn't just another coach in the Big 12 to Fennelly, he was a father of two young boys just like Fennelly.

Off the court,,canadagoosecheapjackets at discount prices from Timepiecetrader. the two didn't talk basketball. They talked sons.

Fennelly said he remembers Budke talking about how much he enjoyed watching his sons play baseball.

"I told him, 'The things right now I miss the most in my life are watching Billy play golf in high school and Steven playing high school football and basketball,'" Fennelly said. "And I told him,We've seen all the best canadagoosesalecheap of 2011. 'No matter what, don't ever miss those.'"

Budke left his wife Shelley, daughter Sara and sons Alex and Brett.

Also killed in the crash were former Oklahoma Sen. Olin Branstetter, who was the pilot, and his wife Paula.

A member of the OSU athletic program sent an email to Fennelly, who said the email requested, "Don't do anything, we just want to play ball.,chloehandbags for sale lowest price $50."

The ISU athletic program will honor this request.

"I think they know that everybody is sad about what happened and it's an unfortunate event and I think being reminded of it a lot is really hard," said junior Anna Prins.

Jim Littell is the newly appointed coach of Oklahoma State.

"I think they're probably playing with a unique level of energy and emotion that most of us can't get our teams to do and they're playing for the love of the game," Fennelly said of the OSU players.

Sophomore Hallie Christofferson, who remembers Budke on the sidelines in his orange blazer, said the team wants to play hard against Oklahoma State like it played against Texas A&M on Sunday.

"I think our guards are really going to have to step in and play one of their best defensive games again like they have in the past," Christofferson said.Ed Hardy Caps Buy On Sale and monclerouterwear with high quality,

Yellow Jackets pumped about playoff run

Starkville High boys soccer coach Brian Bennett worked the phones Sunday afternoon trying to find out some information about Hernando.

Bennett was thrilled to still have his down time filled with soccer.,burberryhandbags offers only partial refund if you get broken watch.

The Yellow Jackets have been putting together a scouting report on the fly as Starkville prepares for tonight's North Mississippi Class 5A title match against Hernando.

Match time is 5:30 p.Visit the premier cheapcanadagoose0 in Melbourne Australia.m. at Starkville's Yellow Jacket Stadium. Our goodbackpackfactory are inspected and confirmed genuine and come with a new watch.

"We called around and did some research," Bennett said.A client requested a video to promote his fakerolexwatches site. "We found out that have a couple of solid forwards and are good in goal.

Then after a pause, Bennett states the obvious.

"They made it this far so that means that have to be real good," Bennett said.

Starkville (12-3) will be playing for its second-ever north state title. The Yellow Jackets last made it this far in 2001 when Starkville lost 4-1 to Tupelo in a match played at Clinton High School.

"Since none of us have ever made it this far, this is real exciting," Starkville junior Taylor Wise said. "We are pumped about winning and continuing to play."

The Yellow Jackets may be playing their best soccer at precisely the right time. In the postseason, Starkville has posted victories over Center Hill (4-0) and Oxford (4-2).

"Our confidence level is really high right now," Bennett said. With all of the replicauhrenwatches sales rampant, "It has always been high with this group.

"However, we did have a bad a couple of weeks there late in the season and I saw a dip. But now its back where it belongs. We go out each time fully expecting to win."

Perhaps the key to the Yellow Jackets' postseason run is the squad's balance. In each playoff win, four different players scored a single goal apiece.

"When we get everybody involved, we have a chance to be a good soccer team," Starkville senior Kase Kingery said after the victory over Center Hill. "If we have balance like that, it takes the pressure off (keeper) Addison (Watson)."

Kingery, who is one of a bevy of talented seniors on the SHS roster, missed Monday's workout due to illness but is expected to play in tonight's championship match.

Watson recoded the shutout in goal against Center Hill and again was solid in the victory over Oxford.

The senior leadership and balance have provided huge keys for Starkville's late push.

"We are like one big family," Wise said. "Most of us have been playing soccer together since we were 6- or 7-year-olds. That is why this year is so special.

"It is the last year for several of these players. This is an emotional time and we don't want it to end yet."

Bennett feels like his squad will get a huge lift from playing at home tonight.

"The last time we played for the north state title, we played in Clinton," said Bennett, who is in his 14th season as coach. "You played the semifinals and finals down there.

"So to be able to play at home for the first time in this setting is very special. Hopefully, we will have a large crowd helping to motivate us."

Sophomore left midfielder Juan Salazar feels like his squad will be ready to play a real competitive match.

"This team has worked really hard together, as one, this year," Salazar said. "I think our tightness is what separates our team from others.

"We have a special bond. It has been a lot of fun playing with such a great group of guys."

Hernando (14-2-2) has advanced with victories over Neshoba Central (5-1) and Ridgeland (2-0).

The lone losses were Horn Lake and Olive Branch -- both by 1-0 counts -- with the last loss coming Nov. 15.

The Tigers have allowed five goals for the entire season.

While the challenge will be supreme, Bennett feels like the contest may hinge on the simplest of things.

"Whichever team keeps their head, will do the best," Bennett said. "Whichever team has the most composure will win.

"You have to be nervous because you are so close. Yet, if you don't win, your season is over.

"Fortunately, we will carry a lot of confidence into the match. We are treating this match just like we did the Oxford one. It is a really big challenge and we are treating it like one."

The Starkville-Hernando winner will face either West Harrison or Pascagoula for the state championship.

The fourth of six matches that day, the Class 5A title match is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Clinton High School.

Mom of 2 abandoned NY girls in custody; girls safe

The two little girls were left on the side of a busy road, dressed warmly in hooded coats and boots and clutching clean diapers.

Three-year-old Dioni told police that her mother had left her and her 2-year-old sister, Dominae, there and had driven off in a car, but she couldn't say why. The girls were on the Brooklyn street corner for at least 20 minutes Sunday, police said. Two women noticed the girls on the side of the road at about 3 p.m., stayed with them and called 911.

New York Police Department Officers Edgard Centeno and Billy Morales took the call and headed to the scene. The sisters were calm but huddled close together, they said.

"They were sticking by each other very close. They were ... I guess a little afraid that they were alone," Centeno said.

Dioni was in a brown coat with jeans and boots. Her little sister was all in pink: puffy pink coat and pink pants.

The officers took the little girls by their hands and walked to the nearest apartment building, at the Bay View Houses public housing, and asked around whether anyone had seen them before.

"Our main concern was just to see who cared for the little girls," Centeno said. "Our main focus was trying to determine who would leave the girls here ... whether it was a mistake or done on purpose."

The officers had no luck at the building, where none of the longtime residents recognized the sisters.

They took the girls by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution.

"They said that they wanted to go home," Morales said. "They said they didn't want to go to the hospital, they wanted to go home."

Meanwhile, detectives were working to find the girls' mother. They had little to go on: The girls didn't know where their home was — they had said they lived in a blue house with flowers out front, but that wasn't exactly right.Great Promotions on Greatest Purchase San Francisco Giants Franchise Fitted monclercoat Shops. They didn't know their mother's last name.

Working with the Administration for Children's Services and with the woman's first name, they tracked down her address, which turned out to be about a dozen blocks from where the girls were left, at a three-story building with a blue door, part of another public housing system called the Breukelen Houses. Detectives arrived at the home, but the mother wasn't there. On Monday, the apartment was padlocked, and the shades were drawn.

Through an intermediary, the detectives let the woman, Dalisha Adams, know they were looking for her, and she surrendered late Sunday night, police said.

Adams,Essential-Watches.com sells only 100% miumiureplicahandbags. 26, has been charged with child endangerment. Neighbors said that they could hear Adams arguing often with a man, believed to be her husband, and that she wasn't especially friendly with other residents of the apartment complex. Police didn't say if she was married and didn't comment on who the girls' father is.

The girls' uncle Diquale Ranger told the Daily News that he was shocked by the news and that their grandmother, who lives in the Bay View Houses but didn't realize the girls were outside, will be seeking custody.

Super Bowl week begins, ice and snow no-shows

Patriots coach Bill Belichick could leave his familiar hoodies in the hotel drawer. There was no need to bundle up for the start of only the fourth Super Bowl week in a northern city.

Ice and snow? Notable no-shows.

Fans threw open their jackets as they walked around downtown streets near Lucas Oil Stadium on Monday, hoping to get a glimpse of a celebrity in town for the game between New England and the New York Giants. Temperatures in the mid-to-upper 50s were forecast for the start of the week, well above normal.

The sunshine felt so good that it made for a joke or two.

"I know the way we're preparing and the way we've controlled the weather, which is hard to do," Colts owner Jim Irsay said, smiling. "But we've had certain techniques that were going to keep hidden, and I hope they hold."

Already, it's way better than Dallas.

Weather is a major concern when the title game goes north, but some of the biggest problems came down south last year. Snow and 100 hours of sub-freezing temperatures snarled traffic and led to injuries when an icy patch fell off the stadium roof and hit six workers.

Indianapolis watched and prepared.

"You can have anything in Indiana," Super Bowl Host Committee spokeswoman Mel Raines said. "Our plan is intended for everything."

In its first three times at a northern exposure, the NFL's title game has experienced a little of everything.

The ground-breaking game came after the 1981 season in Detroit, a test of whether it would work outside the sunny climes of Florida, New Orleans, Texas and California. The week leading up to the game between the Bengals and 49ers included bursts of snow culminating in nasty conditions for game day.

Bored players passed the time that week by spinning their tires on the ice-covered hotel parking lot for fun.

"I think the biggest challenge was for guys not to get bored to tears," former Bengals offensive lineman Dave Lapham said. "We kind of felt cooped up, really. Guys talked about: What are we going to do? Ski? Ice skate? You could strap on skates and skate on the streets. There was nothing do to."

Traffic heading to the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich., on game day got clogged by another burst of snow.canadagooseparkajackets Fans braved temperatures of 13 degrees and a wind chill of 21 below.canadagoosewinterjackets

After that experience, there was talk that the league would never venture north again for a Super Bowl.

"I thought they'd stick to it, honestly," said Lapham, audemarspiguetdiverreplica now a broadcaster for the Bengals. "But with the dynamic of people putting up more money for stadiums, they're going to reward communities."

Ten years later, the Bills and Redskins played for the title in Minneapolis, where the ground was covered with snow but the region handled it much more smoothly.canadagooseparka

Then, the cold became a selling point for some Redskins players.guccicaps Earnest Byner, Art Monk, Monte Coleman and Chip Lohmiller went ice fishing on Cedar Lake in 30-below wind chills. Byner caught a 4-inch perch using a wax worm.

The game returned to Detroit after the 2005 season and things went much more smoothly despite a little snow on game day, when the Steelers beat the Seahawks.

Last year's game in Dallas became an unexpected reminder of what can go wrong in winter, no matter where the location.

A snowstorm and 100 consecutive hours of subfreezing temperatures turned the Dallas area into an ice rink. Snow and ice fell from the roof of Cowboys Stadium, injuring six workers on the plaza below. Organizers had spread events around a 30-mile area to emphasize the regional support for the game, creating major travel problems when the weather went bad.

Indianapolis has done it differently.

Most of the Super Bowl events are clustered downtown, minimizing travel. Temporary structures for the Super Bowl festivities were fitted with wind gauges for safety. On Sunday, two tents at an NFL fan exhibit were closed for about an hour because of high winds.

The roof of Lucas Oil Stadium is designed to collect and melt any falling ice to prevent what happened in Dallas.

The city removed parking meters from high-traffic streets downtown so snow could be easily pushed away. Twenty-four snow removal trucks were on call for the game, four times the normal amount. The host committee recruited "Super Shoveler" volunteers to help clear sidewalks if it snowed.

In some ways, it's a warm-up act for the first true cold-weather title game. The 2014 Super Bowl will be co-hosted by New York and New Jersey, played outdoors instead of in a dome during the middle of winter.

A Little Story About A Coat

You really need to find a way to cope with our harsh northern winters. Foremost, Lady Luck must help you land a good winter coat, and to my delight she did just that for me last year. Entirely by chance I stumbled into a fur shop, and as soon as we saw each other — the coat and I, that is — we knew that we were a fit, a perfect match, and that we would embark on an intimate and warm journey together.

And so it was! The coat hadn't deceived me. It did a virtual dance around me when I wore it. I knew this for a fact because perfect strangers would stop me in the street and ask, "Wherever did you discover such a gorgeous coat?"

I would tell them the story, adding a few colorful details, and in general I was totally thrilled with the whole situation.

It happened that one day I met a neighbor of mine, who, when she saw the coat, fell into a fit of ecstasy. She had to have just such a coat, or the world would come to an end.

"Where did you manage to find such a beautiful coat?" she continued to harangue me. Finally I told her the story of our initial meeting, which might be described in a romantic novel as love at first sight.

"The moment we saw each other," I recounted, "there was a throbbing in my chest, and the two of us swore eternal love."

To cheer her up, I promised my neighbor I would take her to the fur shop. "With your figure," I added, "you will conquer the world, and you are certain to find the coat for which you were fated.

We didn't procrastinate, christianhandbags and post-haste I drove with her to the same shop. "This is it," I said. "You can choose a coat here from the most beautiful and the best."

She looked at herself in the mirror: a knockout figure, tall and graceful, narrow in the waist — quite sexy into the bargain. She did, however, suffer from one tiny, but fatal, flaw: She was a dead soul, a cold fish! Even bright red blush failed to brighten the sour expression on her face. Among the neighbors she was known as "Yom-Kippur Punim," that is, "Atonement-Day Face." What can you do with a person who was born on the left side? It was always the same: If the day was bright, she was under a cloud; if the sun was shining, she stumbled around in the dark; if everyone complained of the heat, she shivered from the cold.

The owner of the shop was a tall, genial lady. She welcomed us heartily, and although she was busy with two other customers, she devoted herself to my neighbor and kept displaying coats for her approval. My neighbor, with great energy, took to assessing the coats — put one on, took one off.burberryhandbags One coat was lovelier than the next. I quietly watched her silent struggle as she considered each garment. The poor thing simply had no inkling of why all the coats were wrong for her. She was unaware that the minute she put on a coat she would instantly throw it a glance of malignant disapproval, and the coat itself would begin to shake itself loose from her grasp.

In the meantime, I sneaked a glance at the other side of the dressing room and noticed that there was quite a hubbub. At its center I was fascinated to see two women who were carrying on coquettishly in front of the mirror.

They appeared to be middle aged, rather short of stature and quite ample around the waist. One of them had a head of flaming red hair. With every toss of her mane, an electric current would pass through the fur coats, which were lined up like soldiers in formation. Every once in a while, the fitting room filled with a burst of hearty laughter, and the very air crackled with the electricity sparked by her exuberant cheerfulness.

At this moment, the shop owner appeared, carrying in her hands a truly fabulous coat, a one-in-a-million jewel. The coat was as light as a feather and as smooth as butter. Indeed, it kept slipping out of her hands. The lively redhead grabbed it for herself and threw it over her shoulders, and immediately the coat came to life. Her red hair brought out the gold color in the fur, and with her every move, with every turn of her limbs, the coat danced and rejoiced.
"What is it?" we all cried out.

"It's a fox," the owner tossed out her reply with evident pride.

The fox was radiant with lively colors, bright gold interlaced with black-golden streaks. The red-haired lady slid smoothly around in the coat, her every move an act of seduction.

She coquettishly stretched out her hands to the mirror, sprang around the room with smart dance steps and carried on her steady flirtation with the fox.

"Ah, this coat! This is me," she rhapsodized.

My neighbor stood there as though she had been physically assaulted. Then she confronted the store owner, who hadn't stopped circling the fiery redhead, and stormed,

"I want to know one thing. Why didn't you show me that fabulous coat first?"

The owner tore the coat off the red-haired woman and draped it around Yom-Kippur Face.

"Here, you have it!!!" cried the owner.

What can I tell you? In that very instant, the fox started to struggle for its life. The poor thing hung about her, colorless and faded, completely exhausted, hardly able to draw a breath. And in the end, its head thrown to the side, it heaved its final gasp.

I would not have believed that such a thing could happen. Just a minute earlier the fox was prancing around with great happiness and joie de vivre, standing firm, ready to conquer worlds. And suddenly, with no warning, it was overcome by complete and utter prostration.

My neighbor, a furious expression on her face, monclerjacketswomens shook the dead animal from her shoulders and handed the slithering fox to the red-haired woman. That one grabbed it with both hands, pressed it to her breast with abandon and caressed the fox seductively, whispering all the while.

"Come to Mama, coachhandbags little darling. Come to Mama."

And the fox instantly came to life!

The woman beamed at her reflection in the mirror, struck out a sexy little leg from under the coat, giggled, and naughtily displayed all her feminine charms. And we, well, we stood transfixed as though under a magic spell. You would think that we had been looking at the same coat all along, but it wasn't so! The coat changed altogether, fakerolexwatches depending completely on the nature and temperament of the woman who wore it.

Naturally, you want to know how this whole incident concluded. What can I tell you? My neighbor's moment of joy quickly evaporated. On the way home she swore to me that she would never again consider buying a fur coat because she "slaughtered them without a knife." So I attempted to comfort her and suggested that she should begin first with a fox collar. Next she could graduate to a fox jacket. In this manner she would allow the animal to accustom itself to her, one small step at a time. She turned down her nose, heaved a deep sigh, and said, "The fox is not my animal."

State joins 'green burial' movement

More than three years after his wife's "green" burial, Lafayette's Tom Keiser continues to be comforted when he visits her final resting place.

Keiser's wife, Susan, who died in September 2008 at age 61, is buried in The Preserve at Spring Vale Cemetery in Lafayette -- the first green cemetery in the state, according to the nonprofit Green Burial Council in Santa Fe, N.M.

Today, the 1.5-acre site off Ind. 25 North is the final resting place for 23 people.

"This is what Susan wanted," Keiser said of his wife. "It was good closure for me and our family."

Green burials, which are eco-friendly, have been called a movement, not a fad. There is one amazing online store with 100s of guccicaps . Advocates say they protect the environment and ecology by reducing the use of toxic chemicals, non-biodegradable materials and fossil fuels.

In addition, the cost of green burials can be lower because unostentatious caskets are used -- sometimes no casket at all -- and there is no burial vault. The body truly goes back to the earth in a natural setting.

At Spring Vale, all green burials so far have been conducted by Hippensteel Funeral Service and Crematory, one of five Indiana funeral homes approved by the Green Burial Council.

The process hearkens back to a simpler time when people were placed in a pine box or wrapped in a shroud and placed into the ground, often without preserving the body with embalming fluids.

When the Civil War came along, formaldehyde came into widespread use to preserve soldiers' bodies to send home for burial, according to Rich Groeber of Hahn-Groeber Funeral & Cremation Services in Lafayette. Formaldehyde,How do internet users feel about audemarspiguetdiverreplica? a toxic chemical, also is a recognized carcinogen.

A green burial utilizes a biodegradable casket that is held together without nails, screws or hinges. Animal glue is acceptable, but not synthetic adhesives. Cloth bags or woven baskets also are used, depending on the material.

There are no concrete grave vaults or liners, and crematory urns of cornstarch or mulberry bark are preferred over metal or stone.

In a green burial, open caskets are possible for the visitation because nontoxic embalming fluids are used.

Green burial sites typically are planted with natural grasses and wildflowers that require little or no mechanized maintenance, and natural stones are used to mark graves.

Hippensteel was the first Indiana funeral home to be certified by the Green Burial Council. Flanner and Buchanan funeral homes in Indianapolis also are certified.

In 2011, there were seven green burials at Spring Vale.

Hippensteel has sold more than 50 plots at The Preserve, including some to people from Chicago and Indianapolis. Joe Canaday of Hippensteel said Spring Vale is the closet green burial to Chicago.

In Indianapolis, Flanner and Buchanan in 2009 opened Kessler Woods, a 5-acre green burial site in Washington Park North Cemetery. Barb Milton of Flanner and Buchanan said there are about 25 people buried at Kessler Woods.,canadagooseparkajackets full lines of this brand you can find at our store,The next important aspect of canadagooseparka lies on their appearances. A few dozen plots also have been sold.

"People are coming from Louisville and Ohio," Milton said. "I ask them why they want a green burial. Some are doing it because of their spiritual faith, while others can't embrace a traditional funeral."

The Green Burial Council has certified cemeteries in 42 states and six Canadian provinces and is expanding internationally, said Joe Sehee, founder of the group.

Sehee visited Spring Vale before giving it a certification.

"You could see from the beginning that they care and did it the right way," he said of Hippensteel and Spring Vale.

Sehee said it is difficult to track all green burials nationwide. He said the market demand is there.

"One out of five seniors wants green burials. That's a conservative number," he said. "Someday, green burials will be the traditional burial like it was years ago, and like it is worldwide."

Sehee and the Green Burial Council think many funeral homes refuse to commit to green burials because they are fearful of losing money.

Canaday said Hippensteel offers a direct green burial for $2,695. He said that price includes the services of the funeral director and staff, transfer of the remains, preparation of the body, necessary permits and transportation to the cemetery. It doesn't include the plot. A green burial plot at The Preserve costs $1,000, said Hippensteel's Dennis Horn.

Paul Dunbar of Hippensteel said green burials can be as expensive as traditional burials if a family wants a walnut casket, for example. The price depends on the family's choice of services and products.

Other funeral homes in Tippecanoe County offer green burials as an option but have yet to bury anyone at The Preserve.

Scott Banes of Soller-Baker Funeral Homes said the cost of opening a grave at The Preserve is almost double that of a traditional gravesite because it must be dug manually so as not to disturb the ecology around it.

Groeber, of Hahn-Groeber Funeral & Cremation Services, said he's had green burial inquiries but no services yet in the "traditional Midwest."

Groeber added that there is no law that requires a family to purchase a vault or outside container for a burial.

"The cemetery sets its own standards because of maintenance," he said.

Sehee said a 2010 survey by the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association showed that 23 percent of people 50 and older preferred a green burial.Purchase Swiss Brands canadagoosewinterjackets and enjoy luxury feeling. A 2007 AARP survey reported that 21 percent of Americans older than 50 want a green burial.

The Preserve has wildflowers and a selection of savanna and prairie grasses. The green burial area was planted after consultation with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Megan Benage, a rural conservationist with the Tippecanoe County Soil & Water Conservation District.

Benage selected a variety of grasses and flowers, including black-eyed Susans, asters, purple cornflowers and daisies. Birds and butterflies are attracted to the flora.

Ready your pet for apocalypse now

With all the talk about 2012 being the year life as we know it ends on planet Earth, it might be an especially good time to think about how your pets would fare should something untoward occur.

Whether or not you believe in end-ofthe-world theories, it's a good idea to be prepared for natural or man-made disasters.

When planning for your own or your family's safety and needs in the event of a calamity, you should consider what your companion animals would need.

"We know from experience garnered during two major fires in the Okanagan some years ago that many people were not able to get back to their homes to rescue their pets," says Bob Busch, BC SPCA operations manager.

"SPCA staff rescued numerous animals, sometimes even crawling through basement windows to save them. We highly recommend, particularly given the prevalence of wildfires and earthquakes in this region, that people have a pet-preparedness plan and supplies ready at all times. Doing so increases the likelihood of your pets surviving a disaster, and if you are unable to get home yourself to rescue them, of being reunited with your pet."

The BC SPCA offers the following tips to incorporate into your emergency preparedness preparations:

Provide a copy of your emergency plan to family members. Assign the responsibility for one pet to each member to prevent confusion later.

Include your pets in your evacuation plan. Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels or boarding facilities so you know where you can take your pets in the event you have to evacuate. Have a backup plan in case shelters are full, such as advance arrangements with friends or relatives outside the immediate area.

Keep emergency supplies and travelling kits ready. Keep an easily portable emergency supply kit near the evacuation route exit. There are many fake oakleymenssunglassesstore that can cheat your money or sell fake branded watches.

Vernon's Bryan Schenker, who used Europe Lives to bike with a small group along the Dutch canals, appreciates the company's go-your-own-way approach.

"We've all been overseas before, but what Dirk's team did was make this adventure easy," said Schenker. "Our bikes were waiting for us when we got there. The itinerary was loose, but organized."

Reservations are now being accepted for Europe Lives' next series of trips beginning in early spring.

There's a new program in Minnesota to help kids eat better at school. This privacy statement discloses the privacy practices for cheapchaneljewelle.

It's called the NuVal system, and the Sartell School District is just the second in the country to test the program.

The system assigns point values to food, so hopefully students can more easily make healthy decisions. For instance, you can compare a bag of chips that scores '24' to an apple that scores '96.'

"Students have a very limited amount of time to spend eating lunch and making their food purchases,Thank you very much for shopping at backpackfactory online store! so now they can say 'I want to be healthy, this is better than that, and I can trade up and make the healthy choice,'" says Jodi Ruhe of CentraCare, which is helping the school start the program.Take advantage of our hermeshandbags today.

Winter sports fashion show raises money for Bastrop fire victims

As a model with goggles crowning her teased blonde hair strutted back to the head of the runway, a male model in bright orange snowboarding pants strode into the spotlight to meet her. They paused, and she playfully snapped his suspenders with a laugh as the crowd cheered.

The WinterGlo 2012 Charity Fashion Show took place Friday, Jan. 13, at downtown nightclub Haven. Organized by Unreal360 and Shi Productions, the event showcased winter sports fashion from St. Bernard Sports to raise money for the Austin Disaster Relief Network.

The venue's usual ethereal, woodsy atmosphere was adorned with Christmas lights,,rolexshop fittedcaps newyorkyankees ladodgers buffalonewyork. silver confetti, fake snow, and wooden cut-out Christmas trees for the occasion. With the doors opening 9 p.m., guests steadily streamed in until the large area surrounding the runway was packed.

Unreal360 and Shi Productions are no strangers to producing nightlife and fashion events. The two have come together to put on various fashion shows in the past, though it has been over a year since the last event, according to Juan Alvarez of Unreal360. The companies typically aim to host two shows per year.
WinterGlo allowed Brown take her experience in a new direction, however, and dabble in the realm of winter sports fashion for the first time.

"My big idea was honestly to do an entire extreme sports show," she explained. "But being that it's winter and I was able to gather with St.,christianhandbags cartier mens pasha seatimer watches. Bernard, I just decided to go ahead and make it only focused on winter and sports. Then the ideas come in about having the snow and the laser lights. All of that kind of played into my idea of what the show is going to look like."

Typical winter wonderland-esque fake snow and strings of white Christmas lights were energized by multi-colored lasers dashing across the ceiling and electronic mixes of popular songs by Austin's DJ Tru.

The models themselves featured beauty looks by Joie de Vie Salon and Spa with playful, messily teased hair in updos, pigtails, and braids. Makeup artists set up backstage, applying colorful eye shadows and glitter to the lids of waiting models. Artists also coated their lips in a variety of colors from traditional red to metallic gold, and even frosted white.

"With this show I really wanted more contrast with the hair and makeup being very punk rock. I like to use the word ‘Pink', as in the artist Pink, because I absolutely love her," Brown said. "So I kind of thought, ‘If you had a snow bunny turned rebel on a slope, what would that look like?'"

In the spirit of the show, even the male models were given swipes of glitter and eyeliner across the eyelids.

"The special tonight is guys in glitter," one of the male models joked backstage while waiting for the show to start.

In working with the 20 hand-picked models for the show,With all of the schoolbagfactory sales rampant, Brown decided to forgo the stereotypical sultry, brooding model persona; she encouraged playfulness and personality instead. Throughout the run-through, she called for a lot of energy, attitude and entertaining interaction between the models as each one left the runway and the next strutted on.

From twirls and dips to dancing and high fives, the models were able to be creative while having a good time.

"I have so many new faces that I'm working with model-wise that I was very impressed with. Their personalities and the fact that this is going to be much more a show of each individual model personality is the most exciting for me," Brown enthused. "That they don't just get to strut their stuff and show off the amazing fashion, hairdo and makeup, but that they're going to be able to play with each other on the runway and have a good time with that. Just nobody fall or drop anybody!"

The featured clothing was provided by St. Bernard Sports,You can find all the guccihandbags you need here. located in the Second Street District. Each of the models was assigned a more casual sportswear look, as well as a winter sports outfit. They sauntered down the runway in everything from plaid button-downs to floral print body-suits to bright ski jackets and snowboarding pants.

The clothing, as well as the hair and makeup, was all voluntarily donated for the event, according to Brian Angeline of Unreal360.

"Honestly it's so great to try to help establish our local businesses," Brown said of relying on Austin companies in these shows. "That makes me happy. They're always in the loop of what's new, what's fresh."

One of the main attractions for local companies to participate was the fact that WinterGlo benefited a charity. Proceeds from the event, which charged a $5 admission fee, went to the Austin Disaster Relief Network. Brown explains that when the Bastrop fires originally happened, she had wanted to do something to help those who had been affected.

The Austin Disaster Relief Network works with local churches and businesses to build a communication network that will allow them to aid people during any natural disasters that may occur, be it fires or flooding.

"They're kind of a church-based organization, which I thought was really cool just because a lot of the churches were the ones that helped those families at the time," Brown explained, "you know, as far as providing them shelter and things like that to the people who lost all their belongings, including their homes."

The show ended up raising an estimated $400 for the charity, according to Angeline.

A successful show like this, however, doesn't come together by itself. Working with Unreal360 and everyone else involved in the planning, Brown spent months coordinating the event. Though as a ten-year veteran of the industry, she is more than familiar with the process.

She originally started as a model herself, doing hair shows and runway events. Knowing how fashion shows worked behind the scenes, as well as drawing on her experience promoting bars and working with prior fundraising events, helped Brown understand what it takes to organize a fashion show and make it a success.

"My biggest advice is don't take shortcuts," she advises those aspiring to work in the fashion events industry. "I see a lot of people out there that are trying to do what I do, and I worked my way up, whether it was just because I had to walk around and pass out fliers, you have to have that personality and that experience. The ability to walk into such a large corporation like the Co-op or St. Bernard's, that takes time to develop those things and develop those skills. So not taking shortcuts is really my best advice."

With WinterGlo under her belt,Purchase Swiss Brands canadagoosewinterjackets and enjoy luxury feeling. Brown hopes to continue the success she has had so far both with Shi Productions and Unreal360, and looks to expand in the future.

"I have a couple of goals with Shi Productions," she said. "I want to definitely get more into the model management side of things because it's something I've always been good at. I want to focus in on that and of course being a producer, working through enterprises and corporations where I can have the sponsored budget to do something so much bigger and so much more fantastic."

In working with models, Brown develops a long-term relationship with many and is able to repeatedly call on them for events. She isn't greedy, though, as she expresses a hope that her shows will allow them to gain exposure and get the attention of other boutiques and producers as well.

With this kind of sharing attitude so rarely seen in such a cut-throat industry, and such ability to give back to those that they work with and local charities, Shi Productions and Unreal360's hopes to continue bringing fashion events to the capital city sound like a win-win situation for everyone and an undoubted success.

Gucci tries on Bohemian as Richmond rocks in Milan

From Gucci's Bohemian grunge to John Richmond's rock 'n' roll attitude and Etro's feathers, fashionistas were treated Monday to a reinterpretation of menswear classics for autumn-winter 2012.Great selection canadagoosecoats of brand replica watches.Live Cycle authenticsunglasses for men and ladies .

Gucci designer Frida Giannini came up with “a vocabulary of intellectual luxury for new rebels" inspired by Austrian-born actor Helmut Berger, she said, dubbing the result “Visconti Grunge" after Berger's director and partner Luchino Visconti.

The collection features oversized, destructured coats, sailor's jackets cinched in the back with big metal buttons, all in rich materials: velvet, British textiles and silk prints.

Short, close-fitting jackets make for a dynamic silhouette, with discreet embroidery or prints of roses and irises -- black on midnight blue, maroon on golden brown.

Injecting a rock element was a vintage leather jacket paired with biker boots, or for really tough guys, a black rapper-style coat of sheepskin and beaver.

Weekend accessories include riding boots zipped up the back, and velvet or varnished leather slippers for the evening.

Sober but intense hues dominate but make room for the occasional “decadent red and peacock green touches", Giannini says.

Mixing and matching is the thing: a heavy wool jacket wraps around a delicate silk vest worn over a bare torso for a sensual vibe.

Donatella Versace brought colour to the equation, whether in graffiti prints or tightly belted jackets in fluorescent pink, green and orange: perfect for night-time cycling.

Shoes, even dress shoes, came with green, blue or red coloured soles, a trend seen on other Milan catwalks this week.

Camouflage pants and hooded anoraks, gold charms pinned on jackets and headgear and a paratrooper's beret studded with Swarovski cristals leant a military air.

Those cristals also turned up on dinner jacket collars as well as gloves and shoes.

Where there was leather, it was black, adorned with little gold chains and studs for a biker look.

British designer John Richmond unveiled his own rapper coat, but a shorter version than Gucci's, striving for “elegance with rock 'n' roll attitude", but in earth tones: brown, grey, taupe and maroon.

The biker's jacket comes in a hound's tooth pattern, the parka is in super-soft wool and the hunting jacket is loaded with zippers.

De rigueur next winter will be Richmond's Pete Doherty-style hat or his wool cap in grey or white. The bomber jacket is in red and black checks with a leather yoke.

A military officer's jacket combines leather, lizard and hound's tooth, a mixing and matching of materials that is trending this season. Weekend suitcases will bulge with Richmond's oversized woollens.

By day, suits are understated plaids and stripes, but when night falls the rock 'n' roll mood returns, with black silk shirts and jackets printed with skeletons or skull-and-crossbone motifs sure to turn heads. A tuxedo trouser trimmed with sparkling braid completes the look.

Etro has a more mystical appeal with a collection titled “The Great Flight: From the Everyday to Myth."

The idea is to “melt the traditional elements of the masculine wardrobe ... like drinking a cup of hot chocolate under the covers", the programme explains.

Clearly in a party mood, Etro suggests sumptuous coloured feathers galore, for next winter's frills, ties, bags, shoes and hats.

For a night at the theatre,The next important aspect of canadagooseparka lies on their appearances. why not a grey frock coat with lemon yellow trim, accessorThe Best wholesalecanadagooseoutlet for Spring.ised with an ultra-light scarf floating over the shoulder?

How Wall Street took $331 million from Philly and its schools

The interest rate swaps, which you can read more about in the PBPC report or at some in the articles I link to below, ostensibly were signed to protect the city from having to pay higher interest rates.chloehandbags When interest rates tanked after the recession, however, the city and School District were left holding the bag and had to pay the old high interest rates, losing millions—or pay millions to cancel the agreements.

Milan fashion offers winter escape

Milan fashion designers are offering an escape route for next winter. Fantasy was the mood permeating runways on the third day of previews for the winter 2013 menswear collections. Men, burdened by global worries, could become yesteryear dandies, or Victorian charmers. In more extreme cases, they might even take flight. Though they went in decidedly different directions, all of the designers took many of the same cues, cheapchaneljewellery including double-breasted suits, evening tailcoats, ascots, velvet slippers, fur trimming, floral prints and brocade. Next winter, feathers evoke freedom on a multitude of garments, allowing men to play peacock.
GUCCI
Next winter's Gucci guys are part rocker romantics, part dandy dreamers. "Tormented poets," creative director Frida Giannini calls them in her show notes, men who have a passion for roses, and are committed to a quest for a personal style. The overall look of the latest Gucci collection is by the designer's own description "Bohemian grunge." This translates into lots of layering, oversized deconstructed coats, double-breasted blazers, collarless shirts, equestrian style trousers, and lace-up riding boots. The rose theme appears throughout the collection from silk prints to woven jacquards, to real roses in the pocket of an evening jacket.
There is room for sportswear in this collection, albeit dandified, with ultra light sheepskin jackets with military detailing worn over lusciously soft turtleneck cable-knit sweaters, paired with pleated riding pants and crocodile boots. Colors range from browns and grays to deep reds and blues, and the darkest of nighttime black. By night the Gucci guy turns into a latter day Oscar Wilde in a black velvet tuxedo worn with the new collar-less shirt, peaking out of the jacket like a silk evening scarf.
In the accessory department, discountcoachhandbags along with the luxurious riding boots, sexylingeries the contemporary Bohemian can renovate his shoe closet with the new patent leather or velvet slipper with a micro logo horsebit buckle. Travel bags come in floral printed jacquard velvet or printed antique maps. For those days our romantic is forced to go to work to be able to fulfill his dreams: Gucci hands him a flat computer size crocodile briefcase with a handle in real horn.
ETRO
Etro's man dreams of taking flight. Designer Kean Etro employed feathers from the tip of his fedora hats to the toe of his velvet slippers in the menswear collection for next winter. Etro turned convention on its head, opening the show with evening wear, featuring such clever interpretations as tuxedo tails adorned with feathers. Jackets also appeared in velvet – a clear Milan trend for next winter – with feathered lapels. As the collection moved into day wear, the use of feathers became even more bold. A jacket of golden and orange feathers evoked a sunrise. An eye-popping patchwork vest of pink, black and orange feathers could easily be worn beneath Joseph's amazing Technicolor dream coat. And a red tailcoat was feathered behind in orange, peacock blue and black.
Etro also used brocade to create striking black and white outerwear, including a long cape with three-quarter length fringed sleeves. Shearling coats are clearly de rigueur for next winter, and Etro distinguished his with brocade or patchwork panels. Like other designers, Etro is offering a broad range of outerwear, including trenches, down vests and a paisley-printed explorer jacket with multitudes of outer pockets. The overall look was heavy on the tribal, with patterns inspired by Native Americans appeared on the backs of jackets.
Etro also made effective use of scarves, light and oversized, creating layered looks seen all over Milan runways. Fringed scarves were worn under jackets. And in an unconventional look, a long scarf was tucked beneath a sweater stitched with feathers, to create the impression of a loin cloth, another tribal echo. The show – which pulsated to such airborne classics as "Fly Like an Eagle," and "Volare" – ended with alternate Etro models wrapped in blankets bearing signature motifs, from an eagle, to paisley to an Aztec print.
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Alexander McQueen's Sara Burton looked to the Victorian age for inspiration for wintertime menswear. The period is most strongly evoked in what the Americans might call knickers, but the British fashion house founded by the late Alexander McQueen calls plus-fours, three quarter length pants often fastened at mid-calf with a button. The plus-fours nicely show off shiny leather lace-up shoes, and look sporty with a jersey and knit jacket – exemplary of the 2013 winter collection's fusing of materials – or elegant in slate gray with a velvet shawl collar jacket. Burton used a feather motif in the collection, pinning peacock feathers on to super soft overcoats and creating an electrified feather print suit in midnight and peacock blue, worn with a matching tie and shirt.
A floral red embroidery created a rich, sumptuous look on black a velvet waistcoat and matching V-neck. Burton, who sprang to worldwide fame when her design was chosen for the wedding dress of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, took over the label after founder Alexander McQueen's death in 2010. Press-shy and highly sought-after, Burton chose to show her wears in presentations rather than a conventional runway show.
MOSCHINO
The latest victim of Moschino's proverbial fashion humor is the bespoke tailoring of London's Savile row, with basted formal evening wear, quilted biker jackets made up of patchwork tweeds and stripes, and unconventional graffiti-painted blazers. For the first time, Moschino is taking it's Cheap&Chic women's winter collection to London, jimmyhandbags where it will be previewed during London fashion week in February.travelingbagfactory

Breast cancer in your shopping bags?

Paraben a chemical compound broadly used each day toiletry products that you purchase and bring home from your local store such as make-up, deodorant, tanning lotions and even your tooth paste.

Researchers for numerous years have studied a possible association between the chemical compounds of parabens those germ fighting preservatives used in everyday personal items such as deodorant, drugs and even food products.

Since 1998, numerous studies has concerns rising about the possible part of the parabens in breast cancer as they have oestrogenic properties. These chemicals act like estrogen and are known to ignite certain breast cancers. Numerous types of breast cancer develop in the breast closest to the armpit where daily antiperspirants are used

Now a new study from the University of Reading, United Kingdom reveals there is evidence of parabens in 99% of breast tissue samples taken however, many of the women did not use antiperspirant or other related products.

Researchers examined from 40 women undergoing mastectomies between 2005 and 2008.,valentinoreplicahandbags up over 5 times. Researchers had discovered 99% of the tissues samples contained at least one paraben and 60% of the samples had contained five parabens. Overall, 160 samples had been collected equaling four from each woman.

Researchers discovered that women who did not use underarm products still had measurable parabens in their tissues indicating they must have entered the breast from other sources. Parabens such as ethylparaben and isopropylparaben can also be found in shaving creams, hair care products, pies and processed meats.

Dr. Phillippa Darbre, PhD, lead researcher, had noted in a news release, this study does not prove that personal care products cause breast cancer. However, "the fact that parabens were present in so many of the breast tissue samples does justify further investigation."

Mr. Lester Barr, co-author and consultant surgeon at University of Hospital of South Manchester, reaffirms the fact noting there is no simple cause and effect association between parabens in underarm products and breast cancer.

Dr. Katherine Lee,M.D.Read reviews of Australias top fakerolexwatches from our user community., breast specialist at the Cleveland Breast Center in Ohio, stated in an email "Although the environmental exposure to parabens as a cause of breast cancer is a possibility, there is no conclusive data thus far to state this as fact." Dana Mirick, biostatisticiana at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, had noted in an email this study in which measurable paraben levels were found in breast tissue of women regardless of underarm product usage. This appears to agree with the Mirick and associates study published study in 2002, that had taken a look at antiperspirant use and breast cancer risk. He notes that "underarm products do not appear to be a significant contributor to the risk of developing breast cancer. "

However, Dr. Sharima Rasanayagam, PhD, director of science for the Breast Cancer Fund in San Francisco, California is not really sure about this as she notes the study gives another piece of the puzzle around parabens and their possible link to breast cancer.

Dr. Darbre did note 'However, the fact that parabens were present in so many of the breast tissue samples does justify further investigation."

Just as Dr. Weiss had stated if this study does concern you purchase natural products that do not contain hormonally active ingredients such as parabens.

Warm winter weather not all bad

Temperatures approached record highs in Bozeman on Saturday as the abnormally warm and snowless winter of 2011-2012 continued.

But for all the consternation it has caused, the warm winter is measured in more than just poor days on the mountain. Just ask those who were outside running, biking or otherwise enjoying the 50-degree weather.

Seventeen folks showed up for the Challenge Dr.Find a chloehandbags Manufacturer and Supplier. Mike Tournament at the Headwaters Golf Course in Three Forks, decked out in baseball caps and light jackets to play 18 holes in a rare January tournament. The biggest challenge presented by the weather was wind, said Helen Fouch, the course's pro shop manager.

The course has opened all but about five days this month and has attracted about 175 golfers, Fouch said.

"Last year we would've been closed at this time," Fouch said. "We've been open more days than we've been closed (this month)."

The course doesn't open unless the temperature reaches 35 degrees by 1 p.m. The greens remain closed to protect the grass, with the pins moved to trimmed spots near the greens. It costs $1 per hole to play for nonmembers, Fouch said.

The course will likely be closed for much of next week though, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Highs are expected to drop into the 20s and high teens for Monday through Wednesday as a cold front moves in before getting into the 40s Thursday and Friday as it passes, said Nick Langlieb, a meteorologist at the NWS Great Falls office.Welcome to Find The Best Watches Online-guccihandbagsreplica. Some snow could dust the valley floor today and during the first half of the week, he said.

"Overall the (weather) pattern is going to become more active for this week, but the really cold push of air isn't going to stick around very long," Langlieb said.

The fewer cold and snowy days might translate into more road maintenance and paving projects in the first half of the summer, said John Van Delinder, superintendent of the city streets department. Hardly any overtime call-outs for snowplowing have been made so far this winter — about 10 overtime hours were worked last month, drastically down from the more than 100 extra hours typically worked in December, he said.

"We want the snow for Bozeman and the skiers. It's part of our heritage," Van Delinder said of the weather. "(But) it's definitely saving on wear and tear on equipment.,valentinoreplicahandbags up over 5 times."

It's also saved about 1,000 tons of sand and the warm weather has prevented roads from the typical winter freeze-thaw pattern that creates potholes, he said.,ralphlaurenhoody at discounted prices including IWC pilot & Portofino watches.

Man of the Year: A Giant in the Sun

For his role as a leader in manufacturing and distribution trade, Aliko Dangote is voted first runner-up as Newswatch Man of the Year, 2011

When Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive officer of Dangote Group mounted the rostrum to receive the prestigious Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, GCON, from President Goodluck Jonathan at International Conference Centre, Abuja, on November 14, 2011, there was spontaneous clapping. The applause was instructive. It was a measure of the acceptability that the Kano-born business mogul, more than any other recipient of the awards, deserved the GCON which is the second highest after the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR. On record, Dangote is the first individual outside government to bag the GCON which is preserved for the Vice President, the Senate President, Chief Justice of the Federation and service chiefs among others.

To many Nigerians, there could never have been a better choice. Kola Jamodu, president Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, spoke the minds of many Nigerians on the eligibility of Dangote for the esteemed honour. “Our response to the decision of the Federal Government to confer the esteemed GCON honour on Dangote can only be positive, we believe the recognition is well deserved and we know that it is a signal that the government has its eyes on the real sector”.

The honour for Dangote, which came in the last quarter of the year,See the top parkajackets from the best brands in the industry. was the icing on the cake of achievements recorded by Dangote in 2011 and which led to his nomination and eventual emergence as first runner-up Newswatch Man of the Year.

Before the state honour, Dangote had earlier in the year bagged several meritorious awards from reputable local and international organisations in recognition of his business and entrepreneurial exploits.

For instance, the African Business Magazine of London, in conjunction with the Commonwealth Business Council, had awarded him the African Business Leader of the Year 2011. Dangote also won the African Entrepreneur of the Year and African Business Leader of the Year 2011 from the All Africa Business Leaders Award group. He was also bestowed with the Honorary Doctorate Degree from Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Dangote has had a long record of achievements and had won uncountable number of awards in the past. But 2011 stands out as a year the federal government truly acknowledged his importance and contributions to the country's development.

His appointment into the 29- man National Economic Management Team set up by the Federal Government to fast-track the achievement of the economic vision of the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan was lauded by many Nigerians as the fruits of his huge investment in the economy and his reputation as one of the highest employers of labour in Nigeria.

Dangote's business empire also experienced immense growth in 2011. On Monday, September 19, 2011, his Group signed a $115 million Investment Agreement with The Republic of Cameroun for the construction of a 1.5 million metric tonnes composite cement production plant in Douala, Cameroun.

Dangote's projection is to import one million tonnes of clinker a year when the plant which is to be completed in 18 months begins production. “From our projections, this $115 million project with an installed capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum will take between 14 and 18 months to complete. We project that we will import one million tonnes of clinker per year, we hope to use up to 30 percent of local raw material in line with our business philosophy of adding value to the economy everywhere we operate”, he said.

In Nigeria, Dangote owns four cement plants. The group currently has the largest investment in cement in Nigeria. These are the Obajana Cement Plant in Kogi State, Benue Cement Company, Gboko, Benue State, and two cement plants in Ibese, Ogun State and Odukpani in Cross River State.

The deal in Cameroon is one of the many investments in cement the Dangote Group has outside the shores of Nigeria. In April 2008, the industrialist acquired 45 percent stake in Sephaku Cement, a South African firm, for three billion Rand (N44.75 billion). The deal with the South African cement company came on the heels of an earlier deal in February 2008 in China. The deal is worth $1.2 billion and it is with China's Sinoma International to build cement plants in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Equitorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia. Dangote also has two cement plants in Ghana.

During the year, Dangote also distinguished himself in the area of corporate social responsibilty using his foundation which he set up in 1993 as a vehicle to impact on the lives of people. In 2011 alone, his foundation spent N15 billion in donations as part of its corporate social responsibility. Some of the donations included N10 billion to Bank of Industries, N2 billion to support the housing sector in the country, N364 million to assist persons displaced by the April post –election crisis in Kaduna, Gombe and Bauchi states, N600 million to the Kano State Poverty Reduction Trust Fund and financial supports to Bayero University, Kano; Otuoke University, Bayelsa; University of Port Harcourt, Crescent University, Abeokuta, and Ubayyu Bin Ka'Ab Islamiyya School, Kano.

In recognition of these achievements, Dangote also got listed in the Forbes Magazine as one of the top entrepreneurs and richest men in the world. He seats atop Dangote Industries Limited, a conglomerate with interests across a range of sectors in Nigeria and across Africa. With an annual turnover of three billion dollars, the core business interest of the group include production and distribution of cement, sugar, salt, flour, fruit juice, pasta, real estate, oil and gas, fertliser, telecoms and steel. There are 13 subsidiaries in the group, and together, they employ over 20,000 workers.

Its core business focus is to provide local, value-added products and services that meet the basic needs of the populace. Its current business interest include cement, sugar, salt, pasta, beverages, real estate, port operations, poly products, haulage services and packaging with an eye on oil and gas, steel and telecommunications.

Dangote recently disclosed that his group's investment in cement and fertiliser would hit $9 billion with Nigeria alone accounting for $6 billion and the remaining $3 billion spread to other West African countries.

His foray into the business frontiers of Africa easily makes him a merchant of repute who cannot be taken for granted. Dangote may be described as a shrewd businessman and a consummate entrepreneur. The Dangote Group started business as a small trading firm in 1977. He has also diversified into shipping, energy development, solid minerals, steel, banking, land transportation and property. Some of the corporate entities that he acquired and restructured into profit making ventures include Benue Cement Company of Gboko, Savannah Sugar in Numan, Adamawa State, and Calabar Cement Company.

Today, his 950 million dollars state-of -art Obajana Cement factory which was commissioned in 2007 remains the largest indigenous and private sector driven cement company in Nigeria.

It is also currently the biggest quoted company in West Africa according to a survey by London- based IC Publications, publishers of Africa Business Magazine.

Just as Dangote dominates the cement market, he equally leads in sugar business in Nigeria. He began with the acquisition of 75 percent equity in Savannah Sugar Company in Numan, Adamawa State, at a cost of N1.35 billion in 2003. As at 2007, he had invested five billion Naira to turn around the hitherto ailing company. Today the sugar firm is not only one of the major manufacturers of sugar but is making profit. The Group which boasts of the largest sugar refinery in Africa has set for itself the target to produce one million metric tonnes of sugar per annum while employing 50,000 people by year 2015 to meet 70 percent of Nigeria's sugar demand from local production.

Dangote's investment in consumables has also made his conglomerate a market leader in salt, rice, spaghetti and macaroni. The Dangote Salt Refinery is reputed to be the largest of such enterprises in Nigeria with a production capacity of 400,000 tonnes daily.

At 53, Dangote has made tremendous contributions to the growth of the Nigerian economy, Dangote Group is today a testimony of successful and rewarding private entrepreneurship.

For his leading role in the business which has given hope to thousands of Nigerians through employment and business opportunities, and his achievements and accolades last year, it was not a difficult task for the editorial board of Newswatch to pick him as first runner-up, Newswatch Man of the Year.
