"We know from experience garnered during two major fires in the Okanagan some years ago that many people were not able to get back to their homes to rescue their pets," says Bob Busch, BC SPCA operations manager.
"SPCA staff rescued numerous animals, sometimes even crawling through basement windows to save them. We highly recommend, particularly given the prevalence of wildfires and earthquakes in this region, that people have a pet-preparedness plan and supplies ready at all times. Doing so increases the likelihood of your pets surviving a disaster, and if you are unable to get home yourself to rescue them, of being reunited with your pet."
The BC SPCA offers the following tips to incorporate into your emergency preparedness preparations:
Provide a copy of your emergency plan to family members. Assign the responsibility for one pet to each member to prevent confusion later.
Include your pets in your evacuation plan. Prepare a list of pet-friendly hotels or boarding facilities so you know where you can take your pets in the event you have to evacuate. Have a backup plan in case shelters are full, such as advance arrangements with friends or relatives outside the immediate area.
