Paralympic athlete gets new sprinting leg

Jerome Singleton Jr. has never known life with both his legs.

Born without a fibula, Singleton, 25, lost his leg below the knee when he was 18 months old.

"Even when I dream, I have to put my leg on," Singleton said.

But that has not stopped the Irmo native from doing what he wanted to do and becoming a world-class athlete. Singleton was in Honea Path on Thursday to be fitted at Friddle's Orthopedic Appliances for a new sprinting prosthetic leg.

Singleton is the fastest amputee on the planet.

He beat South African paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius in January in the men's 100-meter at the 2011 Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Frank Friddle, president of the company, said Friddle's worked with Icelandic company Ossur, which manufactures the feet of the sprinting prosthetics.

"We needed to combine the technologies to give these athletes the best competitive advantage we can," Friddle said.
